When Dad took us to see The Beatles

Created by Family 4 years ago

1964 The Beatles were taking over the world. Helen and I were still very young perhaps aged just 9 and 7 years. We shared a double bed in our home in Bracknell. I remember so very clearly being woken up by dad who stood at the bottom of our bed with the red curtains behind him saying “Well, do you want to get up and go and see the Beatles or not?” Helen had Beatles posters above her head on the wall and instantly replied yes, so obviously if Helen was keen to go then I wanted to go to. So ridiculously early morning but what an experience. I didn’t have a clue what was going on but we were surrounded by zillions of teenagers on the ground outside the terminal and on the roof of the terminal, posters and banners everywhere and such excitement in the air. Dad, bless him got us right to the front, right up to the barrier. Helen was stood in front of him with his arms either side of her holding the barrier. As the plane landed the excitement of the crowd increased, Dad put me swiftly onto his shoulders out of harms way and concentrated on protecting Helen. Apparently as the four Beatles supposedly came into view walking to the terminal building the screaming erupted and the crowds pressed forward. A policeman lifted Helen over the barrier to safety into the pathway cleared for the Beatles to walk. I had never heard screaming before – it was insane. So safely sat on top of dad’s shoulders I closed my eyes and screamed and screamed and screamed. Then Dad asked me “well did you see them then?” Sadly they had walked right in front of us but I had had my eyes closed! Helen however was so close to them she even appeared on some news reports that night! Dad persevered though and stayed around until the Beatles left Heathrow in a coach and we saw them inside. What a dad eh!
